Processing a credit versus a refund

It would be dependent on your bookkeeping procedures to indicate whether you would process a credit versus a refund.

Credits are normally reserved for abnormal circumstances. For example, if a product is out of warranty, but you decided to give the person some money back, or even as a way to give a customer a goodwill gesture if shipping was delayed.

Refunds are tied back to an original transaction in our system, whereas a credit will not.
